Hello to all - we are getting really settled in. We have wonderful neighbors that have been very helpful and friendly as well my co-workers have shown us a thing or two to make sure that we know how the get-around Freiburg. We tried to buck the system today and looked for a grocery store open on Sunday -- no luck. We will have to wait until Monday. It rained here last night really hard and into the a.m. It is nice now and drying up - (about noon on Sunday as I write this) the kids are dying to go on the trampoline. We have colored, cleaned the flat, and now waiting for it to dry before we go out for a hike in the Black Forest.
Saturday - August 6th we went into downtown Freiburg and went to the markets (bought fruits and veggies) and went to a little stores for sandwiches and then to the park to let the kids play before their nap. Saturday night we were invited to a pre-wedding party for a young lady I work with and it is a party for the community a week before the wedding. It is a way to have more people come and wish you well that may not be invited to the actual wedding (like us). There was a tradition of bringing old plates and cups and you throw them and break them -- the more broken pieces the better luck of marriage. We, of course, did not know this tradition (and did not think we should break our plates owned by our landlord... :)) but other people let us share in the tradition and Brody and Abby really got into it - see the pictures below. The party was at a beautiful old barn on the countryside and the food was outstanding. All the community members bring a dish to pass and it was so delicious.
As for work - it is going well. I have a lot of great people that I am able to work with. Language classes start next week and Brad's will start in September once the kiddies start school.
We are starting to plan trips around Europe for October, and March. The winter months we will stay close as we are right next door to Switzerland. From what we hear Freiburg has great skiing and winter activities. It is hard to imagine but we are 1 hour from France and 1 hour from Switzerland.
Please email us and let us know how you are doing. All our love.
Nancy and Brad
